If you are a client listening to this and have never used a computer, please ask someone to help you. It is very important that you understand this section before going further. Below are instructions that career counselors and case managers get, to help people like you learn to use computers better.

Career counselors or case managers: Please review the following tips with clients who are unfamiliar with computers. It should only take five minutes to review and have the client try the tips. This is easy to do so please do this thoroughly so that everyone involved can get the most of the program. (Remember to show clients the Back button on their browser!)

The mouse or touch pad:The left button on the mouse is used to click on buttons on the screen. From now on, when we tell the client to click, we mean that he or she presses the left button on the mouse once. Have the client practice clicking on different parts of the site to move through it. The right button on the mouse does not need to be used in this site.

Scrolling: Scrolling lets users move up and down (and side-to-side) on a webpage that is larger than the screen. Users can scroll by moving scroll bar up or down. The scroll bar is the bar on the far right side of a window. They can also scroll by holding the left mouse button down over the "up" or "down" arrows on the top and bottom of the scrollbar. Try this.

Tabs: In some parts of the site, information is organized under different tabs. Each tab is like a file folder. There is lots of information, but you can only see the front one. Explain to the user that, like a file folder, only one can be in front at a time. To look at a folder, the user can click the tab he or she wants to look at. When the user clicks the tab, the relevant information will appear. This is on the Job Search page and can be reviewed once inside the site after completing the assessment, if necessary.

Text boxes: A text box is like an unlimited-size piece of paper. To write in a text box, the user needs to move the curser into the box and click. The user will see the cursor. The user can move to any place he or she has written by moving the cursor to that area and clicking the left mouse button. Text boxes are in the online workbook and can be reviewed once inside the site after completing the assessment, if necessary.

Highlighting text: To highlight text, move the cursor to the point where the user wants to begin highlighting. Hold the left mouse button down and move the cursor along the text. If the cursor moves down a line, the entire line of text is automatically highlighted. When the user has selected all the text he or she wants to highlight, he or she can let go of the left mouse button. To delete a selection, press the 'Backspace' or 'Delete' button. This may not be necessary to show them unless they are well on their way to typing within the text boxes.
